Challenge
Anime Digital Network (ADN), a leading platform for anime enthusiasts, wanted to further bolster its security posture and optimize resource utilization. As part of its ongoing commitment to providing a seamless user experience, ADN identified an opportunity to refine its Web Application Firewall (WAF) and enhance protection against bot traffic. Addressing this challenge would not only strengthen security but also reduce unnecessary backend strain and AWS costs. ADN partnered with TrackIt to implement a refined, high-efficiency security framework.
Implementation
TrackIt led a strategic refactoring of ADN’s AWS WAF to introduce robust bot protection rules across all four ACLs. AWS-managed bot control rules were implemented, leveraging AWS’s continuously updated database of bot signatures.
Python-based scripts were used to simulate bot traffic, ensuring that the new setup effectively blocked malicious requests while preserving a seamless experience for legitimate users. Two rounds of rigorous testing validated the accuracy and efficiency of the updated security measures. The deployment was executed smoothly, with real-time monitoring confirming an immediate and dramatic reduction in bot traffic.
Results – Enhanced Security and Cost Efficiency
The implementation led to measurable improvements in security, cost efficiency, and system performance. By blocking unnecessary bot requests, ADN is on track to achieve significant savings on AWS bills, with reduced backend load ensuring resources are allocated to real users. Security has been significantly strengthened, mitigating threats like automated scraping and credential stuffing.
ADN now benefits from enhanced real-time monitoring through Amazon CloudWatch, enabling continuous oversight of bot activity. To further strengthen its security framework, ADN is leveraging TrackIt’s Web Application Firewall as a Service (WAFaaS) for proactive threat management and ongoing rule optimization.
